About Openpak

An open Flatpak app store. Judge the work, not the workflow.

Openpak is a community soft-fork of Flathub's open-source infrastructure, run under independent governance and rebranded with its own signing keys. It was created in response to Flathub's May 2026 generative-AI ban, and it is AI-policy-neutral: we welcome AI-assisted and AI-generated contributions and gate on quality, not on how the work was made.

For users

Openpak is an open Flatpak app store you add alongside Flathub, not instead of it. Add it as an additional Flatpak remote and your existing setup keeps working — runtimes still come from Flathub for now.

It runs on a community soft-fork of Flathub's open-source infrastructure under independent governance, with its own signing keys. Same familiar experience, a different curation policy.

Apps are reviewed for quality and safety: they must work, declare honest permissions, and ship correct metadata. We are not anti-Flathub — we are a parallel option for people and projects who want one.

For developers

Openpak was created in response to Flathub's May 2026 generative-AI ban. If that policy turned your app away, you are especially welcome here.

We judge the work, not the workflow. AI-assisted and AI-generated contributions are welcome — we care that your app works, is maintained, is distinct, is cleanly licensed, and respects users.

Openpak is a soft-fork of Flathub's tooling, so publishing should feel familiar. It is not a trademark fork: no Flathub name, logo, or keys — Openpak runs under its own identity and signing keys.

What we check (quality, not workflow)

Openpak is AI-policy-neutral. We never ask whether an AI tool was used to write or generate a contribution, and we never reject a submission because one was. Instead, we judge the result. To be published, an app should:

  • Work — it builds and runs, and reviewers actually test it.
  • Be maintained — there is real, ongoing ownership behind it.
  • Be distinct — not the 40th identical to-do app.
  • Be cleanly licensed — clear, honest licensing.
  • Respect users — correct metadata, honest permissions, and no undisclosed telemetry.

One thing we do not tolerate is hostility toward the volunteers who review submissions. Be civil and we are glad to have you.

Get involved

Openpak is built by volunteers. Every role matters — find them all on GitHub.

  • Developers — bring your apps, especially the ones the AI ban turned away.
  • Reviewers and packagers — the highest-value role: this is the work that makes curation real.
  • Sysadmins — help keep the infrastructure healthy.
  • Designers and writers — improve the experience, the docs, and the brand.

Discuss

Questions, proposals, and policy discussion happen in the open.

Funding and governance

Openpak runs under independent, community governance with its own signing keys. It is early and volunteer-run; a funding model is forthcoming. We will not list sponsors or supporters we do not have — when there is something real to share, you will find it here.
