Your console or emulator links itself to the account and gets a friend code. Every link is listed here and can be revoked.
Add your friends
Swap friend codes, accept requests, and the friendship shows up on both consoles.
Play
Your friend list follows you onto the console. Game invitations are delivered, but joining a game from one does not work yet.
