About OpenPak
OpenPak is an open replacement online network for consoles whose official online services are shutting down or already gone. It runs the services that let those consoles and their games go online again: accounts, friends, presence, matchmaking, cloud saves, news and shops. Players keep their own console, its real firmware and their own games; only the network side is replaced. OpenPak serves the Nintendo Switch, Wii U, 3DS, Wii and DS, has Xbox, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in development, and keeps its own emulator forks that go online through it the way a real console would. Its code is free software under the AGPL-3.0, and anyone may run their own network from it. OpenPak is in public alpha: things break, and accounts and saves may be reset.

Emulators
OpenPak keeps its own emulator forks. They boot the console’s own firmware where they can and go online through OpenPak the way a real console would. Each is an independent project and not an official release of its upstream.

Standing on shoulders
OpenPak builds on the work of Pretendo Network (including nex-go), WiiLink, Kinnay (NintendoClients and the Game Server List), and the upstream emulator projects listed above. Forked code keeps its original licence and credits.
What OpenPak does not do
- It never ships games, firmware, keys or console data, and never explains how to get them. Players use their own console and their own games.
- On Switch, Wii U and 3DS it changes where the console connects and leaves game code alone. Wii and DS games have no other way in, so their patchers redirect each game.
- Implementations it may not legally copy are used only for facts (ports, wire formats), never for code.
